Vale Ian Lowe

Diamond Valley Singers were saddened to hear of the death of one of our founders, Dr Ian Lowe.

Ian Lowe recalled conducting the Eltham Community Orchestra in 1985 when World Vision launched the Ethiopian Famine Appeal. Ian realised he could use the orchestra to raise some money for this cause. "We put on a concert and presented Trial by Jury (Gilbert and Sullivan) in the Baptist Church, Greensborough, and this led to the formation of the Diamond Valley Singers." Since that first concert DVS has donated over $200,000 to various local and international charities.

Ian has been an integral part of the group since its formation; as President or working on the committee, and as Musical Director or accompanist for many of the productions and concerts the group has produced and performed. He retired from his last committee role of Treasurer in February 2025.

Ian worked in mathematics education from graduation to retirement at the age of 75. His varied career included innovative teaching in schools in Australia (Victoria) and Canada. He worked in curriculum departments and wrote many textbooks in Victoria, Canada, (Western) Samoa and Malawi, including two for the Australian Academy of Science. He researched education in (Western) Samoa (for his MEd) and Malawi leading to his PhD, awarded at the age of 68. For the last decade of his career he worked as a mathematics consultant for The Mathematical Association of Victoria, of which he is a Life Member. He also ran a number of concerts to raise funds for the Elizabeth Nursery School in Malawi.

He was known in DVS as a kind and gentle man, generous with his time, musical knowledge and skills, supportive with nervous or new singers, with a sharp wit on occasion, and devoted to his family. Our thoughts are with Jan, Sarah and Rachel and his extended family on their sad loss.

Ian's memorial will be held during the day on Friday 19 September, at the Eltham Community Centre.

DVS Programs

Join a choir

2025 marks the 40th anniversary of Diamond Valley Singers making music in the community - a great achievement! Over the decades, the styles of music being performed have evolved and developed. DVS Members enjoy a wide range of musical tastes, so we try our best to cater for them all!  At the moment our choral programs are currently in recess.

Get involved

Shows and DVS activities require so much more than what you can see. These are all important to our success. Set building, costumes, publicity, accompanists, props, lighting, sound, back stage, front of house, makeup, scenic, fund raising ….. directing, choerography, musical directing, stage management, producer, committee of management and so much more. Interested? Get involved.

Audition

Each year DVS presents a number of choral works / oratorios, a musical theatre show with a predominantly adult cast and a musical theatre show with a junior cast. We hold auditions to cast all the leading roles, but chorus members in the adult production do not need to audition or to have any previous experience. So if the thought of performing onstage appeals to you, DVS is a great place to fledge your theatrical wings!

In response to the number of people auditioning for our youth productions, there is an audition process for the ensemble. We make our audition process as friendly as we can.
